The Day I Hacked Twitter

Oh hai blog, not been here for over a year!

Writing this so I can share the hilarious @replies I got this afternoon, but while I'm here, might as well fill you in with the other fun facts of today.

As most know, people figured out how to embed javascript commands into tweets earlier today - if not, look here.

Long story short, I figured out how to make (copied) one that would create a hyperlink over the whole of my followers' web browsers. Once one puts one's mouse over said hyperlink - ie as soon as anyone loads twitter.com - it sends the tweet: 'RT doog_' which thus retweets my last tweet.

Some say evil, some say genius.

Anywho, as a result, I can somewhat proudly say it spiralled out of control and got me 36000 RTs as shown below:

Then I figured out that it was retweeting my last tweet, so if I tweeted something else, it would retweet that - but would then stop the chain of viral retweeting (tricky to explain, just think about it). Decided I'd got far enough and it was worth stopping the RTs for a bit of promo :P

So that went well, even if I only got 3 youtube subscribers from it!

Aaaanywho, the results of the day were 45 new followers, some HILARIOUS @replies (I literally couldn't stop myself laughing out loud on the train when reading them!), a RT by the WHITEHOUSE!, a comment on a site that made me lol on the train also ('Yo doog I heard you like retweets so i put a tweet in your tweet so you can tweet while you tweet'), and exposure on a few blog/news websites ^_^ such as here and here.

Highlight of the day had to be checking my twitter an hour after posting the link (not knowing if it had worked) and hesitantly saying out loud to the office something along the lines of 'Errr I wrote this script in a tweet and err it's got my tweet retweeted about thirty five thousand times o_O' at which point everyone turned around and was like... 'ahbwwwaaahhhhh!??!?!?!' ^_^

And to those who don't have much of a sense of humor by something that, in REALITY, i.e in the real world, caused no harm - this is usually the type of person who stays in all night on the computer, constantly checking facebook and twitter not knowing what to do with your evening and probably will amount to nothing in life - if that's you I'm describing (like #56 below), I don't care if you think I'm a dick. If you'd have done it, you would have found it just as funny!

Something happened in Malta

- I also wanted to call this blog Just Some Thoughts, as that's really what this blog is. But I decided to stick with this one. Just wanted to let you know that. Hah -

First off, not gunna apologise for not posting much recently. Everyone has moments like it and everyone always apologises on their return. Apologies are for the weak: But also, the truth is that the majority of you probably wouldn't have realised had I not said this. So yeah, here we go:

Okay, it didn't happen in Malta, but is a product of the amazing time I had there:

I realised how boring my life is at the moment.

I never used to find my job boring - you could even say I enjoyed it - but after coming back from 2 weeks in almost-paradise (I say 'almost' due to my newly obtained phobia of jelly fish: Malta is the first place I've been where I've known them to be around), I'm spending far too much time wanting work to be over. As it happens, I'm leaving in just over a month to start university. So luckily it's not really a big issue.

If I wasn't leaving, I know I would have been promoted by now - literally been told that - so I don't think it would be as dull as I'm currently finding it. But I wasn't even supposed to have a gap year, so I definitely wouldn't change my uni plans now. (I even turned down a £23k gap year job at Sussex Uni last year because I didn't originally want to take a one, but then things changed and I was forced delay uni... but by the time I knew, it was too late to take that job! :( Talk about being gutted.)

I've decided that I need to be successful in later life. Don't know how, I just have to be! I know it's lame, but when you sit in BA's first class and watch all the losers walk past you through to economy, you never want to fly economy again. Just one of the reasons I need to be successful, haha.

Despite this, I've also decided I'll never stick out a dull job (for too long) just for the money. Having money is undoubtably fantastic, but there has to be better ways of earning it than spending 8 hours a day, everday, somewhere you don't want to be. I genuinely believe that if you strive for success hard enough, it will come - at least for myself, anyway.

I never used to understand why my dad quit his very well paid job 12 years ago to start his own business (and end up struggling for a fair few years). Now I guess I do.

Writing this in the garden at the moment; such wonderful weather. Would love to be back in Malta, but at least I returned to a bit of sunshine. Had the day off work too today, due to hospital appointment, so I'm thankful for that too ^_^.

Just re-read all this blog so far and had a little think: to be honest, I'm probably being over dramatic. My jobs not all that bad, I think I'm just missing being on holiday too much!

I was also thinking how it would be nice to get away from England and go live elsewhere for a while. But unfortunately it's not that simple. England is dull due to it being where work/learning/dull things are based. Moving to a different country, one is forced to bring those things along and so I doubt it would be long before getting away from that country for a while would become tempting! I guess I could go back to the success thing: I would so love to be able to go on holiday loads of times a year, and then retire early to one big-ass holiday at the end of it all!

Template for New Youtube Channels

This will be useful for a few people, so am making it available to download here.

The template is in Photoshop format (.PSD) and is for partner channels with 875px by 150px banners:

The width is 1600px, sufficient for most monitors (22" widescreens are normally of this resolution)
I don't suggest using the full length of the template as it will produce a large jpg file that may take a while to load. Make your design and then crop the length to whatever is necessary.

Also, if you prefer to have your design all in the background, then set this transparent gif as your banner:

This method might make it trickier to setup different clickable areas of the banner, but it means you have more freedom in your banner & background flowing together/overlapping each other - like this:

To setup the image map when your banner is actually in the background:
Screen shot your new youtube page, paste it into my template PSD & align it with the other layers in there. You can then use the 'Actual Banner Area' layer to cut out the area of your background that will be clickable, then use that cut out image to upload to an Image Map creator website, like this one: http://www.image-maps.com

New Video Tag Options for Uploaders

We've listened to your feedback and, as a result, today we are rolling out some changes to provide you with even greater control over how your videos are viewed on youtube.com and the YouTube embedded player. Specifically, upon upload you will now have additional options to optimize the appearance of your content. For example, you will have the option to properly crop and scale videos, as well as default to a high quality viewing experience (where available). A complete list of options is directly below; just insert any of the hint tags described into the tags field of your video and you'll be off and running.

We are now able to support the following video tags:

yt:crop=16:9: This tag will remove windowboxing by zooming in on the 16:9 area
yt:stretch=16:9: This tag will fix anamorphic content by scaling to 16:9
yt:stretch=4:3: This tag will fix 720x480 content that is the wrong aspect ratio by scaling to 4:3
yt:quality=high: This tag will default playback of a video to high quality, depending on availability

When uploading, you can insert the appropriate video tags in the "Tags" field, which is just below the "Description" field. See the image below for more details.

As you can see, these changes provide you with tremendous flexibility. For example, if you have a standard definition master file which is letterboxed or windowboxed, you will not need to edit the master file before upload. Rather, you can upload the master file and simply attach the yt:crop=16:9 tag to the video; as a result, the YouTube player will zoom in on your 16:9 content, effectively removing the black bars and optimizing the viewing experience for users.

We believe these video tags will save you time by encouraging you to always upload master files, rather than spend time editing these files before upload. We also believe that by leveraging these new video tags you will put yourself in the best position possible to take advantage of (and optimize your videos for) future YouTube player changes and modifications.

One.
Was on the train back from Brighton after having had my haircut. Two women - who were strangers to each other - get on at Preston Park. One with a bicycle (Woman B), one with a pram (Woman P). Woman B secures her bike and sits down.
A moment later, Woman P blurts out, "Want a wet one?!"
Wayoooooo!

Wait, what?
All sorts of (sexual) confusion ran through my head as to what on earth Woman P might have meant.
Within a few seconds, to my disappointment, it became apparent that Woman B had got dirty oil on her hands from the bike chain and kind Lady P happened to have some baby wipes - or 'Wet ones' - on her person.

Two.
Was now back from Brighton and in the leisure centre for a swim/chill-out sesh.
Sitting in the sauna with a fat bloke next to me, remaining silent because I can never be bothered to strike up conversation with randoms in this situation.

A woman opens the door and immediately proclaims, "Oh, no, oh err sorry. Sorry."

In my amazing comedic timing, I quickly remark on the situation.
"Hah, don't think she liked the look of you mate!"
Comic genius, eyy?

No. The bloke sighs and mumbles sincerely, "Yeah, I seem to have that effect on women.."

Ohshi. I suddenly realised that my comment might have been appropriate, maybe even funny, if said amongst friends. But it quickly dawned on me that this guy could quite easily kill me, and probably would have if he'd had a couple of pints down him.

Oooops.
I got outta there as quickly as I could!

Three.
Actually, I know I had another gooden, but I've forgotten it and only have 10 mins of my lunch break left. But let me just enlighten you on this one:

You know those people that like to drive slow, yeah? Some of them even have a sticker in the back stating something along the lines of, 'BACK OFF. I'm sticking to the speed limit'. That's fine, I got no beef wiv 'em.

However, too often I find THEY ARE LYING.

I wouldn't care if you stuck to the speed limit. I DO CARE THAT YOU INSIST ON GOING 20mph IN A 30 ZONE! TUT. People like you cause accidents and unnecessary lateness.

I'm so lazy. I have so much time in which I could be being productive, but never can be bothered.

I have a fair few video/song/blog ideas that I like when I come up with, but then sit on them for a few days and end up thinking about them too much to the point that I bore myself with them, give up and move on to the next idea. And so the cycle repeats.

I went through my music folder yesterday and there so were so many songs that I'd made/almost completed but never got round to making videos for.

Dailybooth is annoying. I knew it would become popular, hence why I grabbed the username 'doug' so quickly, but it's lame and self-obsessive.

I couldn't think of a title so I went with the first thing that came into my mind. o_O

I have a few projects going on at the moment:

>Another is with Mazi.tv. Created by Maz, it is a weekly tech show based on reviewing UK and European start ups. I filmed Episodes 5-7, with Sophie presenting, last week. Ep5 has been edited and should be going up tonight.

I have my '3 Month Work Appraisal' now, where we discuss how i'm getting on. Joy.

Managed to grab 8 hours sleep last night, yet still be up for 5.45am. I can tell you, it was a looott easier to get up compared with when I scrape a measly 5-6 hours! Am gonna try and do it more often, despite having to get ready for bed not long after 9pm.
Booked flights for holiday I'm having in the summer with a few old mates! - Business Class :P - Am incredibly excited for this already despite it being half a year away.
Due to having money stolen through PayPal, I've been officially, for the first time ever, in debt for the last 2 weeks. The money is on its way back into my bank but I've been informed it could take up to another 3 weeks for it to land in my account; I'll stop worrying when I know its definitely back in there. But yeh, the 'happy' thing in relation to this is it's pay day in a few days! :D Finally, my balance will be restored and I'll have spending moniez again! Phew.
I'm being more productive at home after work, despite there still being the presence of bordem towards the latter end of the evenings. Have been doing lots of music stuff recently. Mostly for other people though, so I shalln't be posting it here for the time being.

In other news, I really want to go to New York this summer. Its such an endlessly fantastic place. I'm hoping I can coax a few unknowing friends into the same mindset.

Going to bed now. 7 hours looks feasible.

Do you find it annoying when videos that you've already watched re-appear in your subscriptions page?

I've written this simple fix so that if a video does re-appear, it will be greyed out so that you know you've already watched it. (Scroll down for an example)

To enjoy this simple fix, you will need Mozilla Firefox and a well known add-on called GreaseMonkey.

Download and install Firefox if you don't have it already.
Install the add-on GreaseMonkey.
Click relevant link depending on your location:

YT Sub Page Fix - UK
YT Sub Page Fix - US (global)
YT Sub Page Fix - New Zealand
YT Sub Page Fix - Australia
YT Sub Page Fix - Canada

That's it! Your "My Subscriptions" page will have changed next time you open it up.

Productive Afternoons.

Time to Alarm: 7h51m

Kay this is gunna have to be a quicky if I want to feel less dead tomorrow than I did today.

I need to be more productive. I work 7am-3pm and tend to get home shortly before 4pm. Sometimes I go for a gym 'n' swim sesh after work which gets me home more like 6pm.

The thing is, all I seem to be doing in the evenings is playing mindless games on a generic multiplayer internet flash game website [you cannot speak of said website out loud, else you will burn in the depths of hell], watching youtube videos, tv or a film, or surfing the net. I don't feel I'm being productive enough.

Eugh I dunno, I just feel like I could be doing something with my evenings at home. Like making a twitter web application that is disguised as my company's website so that I can sneakily tweet during the day ^_^ ..or initiate some of these entrepreneurial (money making) ideas i've had recently. That's right, I've devised a way to hack PJ's adsense. Mhmmm.

Weekends are currently on hold due to having £800 stolen through PayPal. I'll most probably be getting it all back, but its still hassle and has meant I'm officially [temporarily] broke - in fact, in debt to my bank - for the first time ever. More on that later though.

Anywho, 15 minutes have passed and I must dash off to dreamland. And not dilly-dally on the way.

Hey all, hope you had a nice Christmas :) I went to the closing day of my local Woolworths today and took some pictures...

Sort of a shame to see it close, not that I ever go in there. Got some miinntt deals though, HDMI Cable for £0.20, originally £16... may have stuck a fake sticker on there to get it so cheap ^_^ Also got 14 good DVDs for £3.20 because they were without their original cases! Mental.

I was particularly disappointed to hear Officers Club is about to close too. I shopped there a bit, usually ended up getting bored of the clothes I bought from their within a few months, and probably spent way too much in there come to think of it. [Picked up some retro shoes from there today]
Still, aside from Next (literally, its aside Next.. next to Next.. however you want to put it xD), it was really the only clothes shop in my town. Really don't have a clue as to what shops are going to move in to replace them: Can't be a small shop, they're all slowly dying with the recession and all that jazz. Maybe food/drink related? Hmm.

Very much looking forward to New Year's Eve! Just mon tues wed at work then off for ANOTHER 4 days! Being a full time employee, I REALLY do come to love this time of the year! Worked once last week :P

Anywho, 4am is approaching and I need to get up early enough for there to be enough light left in the day to wash my car.

GAHH! Seriously. I shut my eyes and what does my brain start doing? Playing Blockles ¬_¬ by itself! Not even joking.

Sunday night, I decided I was going to do an all nighter. I got 21 hours sleep over the weekend, ending at 3pm on Sunday. I was going to have to get up at 5.30am on Monday so knew there was no chance of me getting much sleep. So I went ahead as planned, killed some time, played Blockles ¬_¬ till 3.30am, watched some videos, made my lunch.. then realised although I wasn't tired, my legs had began to ache and my eyes were feeling tired. So at 4.30am, I sleep-deprivational-related-deliriousingly decided to text Dave an update of how my all nighter was failing.. then jumped into bed with the hope of getting up to an hours power nap.

The hour was not spent sleeping. No. It was spent playing Blockles in my mind. I would try and think about something else. I would concentrate as best as I could to keep my mind focused on this other thing. But no matter what, within 20 seconds my mind would be back playing fucking Blockles ¬_¬

Okay enough of that, I think you get the idea. Its such an awesome game, but seriously.. when you're watching Top Gear and see Jeremy Clarkson's shoulders as a green L and purple L and his head as a red square.. well, yeah.

So as I hinted at earlier, this new job of mine has me working 7am til 3pm. The first few minutes when you have to get out of bed are the worse, but to be honest, I quite like being up so long before the Sun and most people in our time zone have woken. Being able to hear the start of the Chris Moyles Show on Radio 1 is pretty awesome too.. if you haven't heard the opening "Cheesy Song" I suggest you get up at 6.30am tomorrow.. or listen to this similar version of the song: (They reword it all the time, this isn't the latest obviously)

Today was awesome. Tom, Ian, Alex (Ian's housemate) and I were in Brighton (near Barry-land) filming. Basically it involved going up to random people and asking questions, but I don't want to spoil too much cause I think it will become an epic video when Tom uploads it onto his channel next week. You'll just have to wait till then.

In other news, I have been driving my new car for a few days now after finally getting it taxed! :D Unfortunately I couldn't quite figure out the Seat Ibiza radio wiring colour codes: after touching two wires together, the car locked itself o_O ..that's when I decided to give up and wait till next week for the garage to do it (for free - included that in the deal). But yeh, it's meant that I've had no radio to listen to; to and from work I catch up on Scott Mills podcasts from the past few weeks that I've missed, listening on my phone.

Finally, I came up with the classic line "Hail fatty, the failing Hatti" in Tom's blogtv show tonight. The subsequent 15 minutes were spent deludedly making the following. Enjoy ^_^

Its my last day temping at a Cats Protection charity on friday. Seeing as lots of people in the office often bring in food to share, I decided to make a chocolate torte for everyone =] ..and decorated it with white chocolate accordingly ^_^
